Punk Rock rose to popularity as a rebellious response to the self-indulgent, pretentious direction that Prog Rock had taken in the 1970s, and as a voice for the anti-establishment movement following the post-Vietnam era. Marked by short, energetic songs with little ornamentation, Punk Rock is more about spirit and feeling than musical technique. This show covers punk’s classic period, including bands like Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Clash, Blondie, The Stooges, and Patti Smith to its rebirth in the 80s with Black Flag and Bad BRains . Students might hear striking similarities of styles to current Pop Punk bands, as the legacy of the original generation of Punk bands continues to inspire artists today. While Punk is a great show for less experienced rockers, it still challenges more advanced students and teaches them the art of showmanship and stage presence. Don your spikes, mohawk, and ripped jeans and get ready for a season of Punk Rock!

The dominant rock and roll genre in the 1970s, Hard Rock evolved out of the heavy blues favored by bands like Cream, Blue Cheer, and Iron Butterfly in the 1960s. By the early ‘70s, bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, and Black Sabbath had achieved superstar status. Soon, a slew of artists would find mainstream success with the Hard Rock formula: distorted guitar riffs, soaring solos, amped up boogie in the rhythm section, and wailing lead vocals. AC/DC, KISS, Aerosmith, Heart, Queen, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, and Van Halen were just a few of the many bands that rose to stardom during this era. The ‘70s Hard Rock show is a great opportunity for all instruments to build chops by learning some of the most classic songs in rock and roll history.

The ‘90s Rock show is arguably one of the most popular School of Rock shows in our collection. Packed with a plethora of what are now known as ‘classic rock’ songs, the stylistic spectrum of this show is wide enough to excite any student rocker! Hard Rock, Singer/Songwriter, Alternative and Indie encompass this decade of music that many parents grew up on! While some connect the era of ‘90s Rock to the Seattle-area Grunge scene with bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam, this show expands to also feature acts like Weezer, Hole, Oasis, No Doubt, Alanis Morissette, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Green Day. The ‘90s Rock show will stretch any students’ musical progress while delighting and creating nostalgia for their parents!

While “Indie Rock” began as an underground DIY movement in rock and roll in the late 1970s and 1980s, the term began to be used more broadly in the aftermath of Nirvana’s success in the early 90s to refer to any music that fell outside of mainstream tastes - a synonym to the more well-known “alternative” label. By the turn of the millennium, Indie Rock was mainstream, and became defined by the hard-driving garage-influenced sounds of bands like The Strokes, The Walkmen, Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, Dead Weather, and The Killers. As the 2000s unfolded, Indie Rock evolved to incorporate more varied influences, such as Folk (Grizzly Bear, Brandi Carlile, Phoebe Bridgers), Space Rock (Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard), World Music (Vampire Weekend, Florence + The Machine, Arcade Fire) and Electronica (Imagine Dragons, MGMT, St. Vincent). This show celebrates all of the varied sounds of Indie Rock in the 21st Century, and is a great option for students of all instruments and experience levels.

Queen formed in London, England, in 1970, a time when heavy Rock and Roll was reaching mainstream audiences and record companies were looking everywhere for the “Next Big Thing”. The band achieved global success in no small part due to the charisma and supernatural talent of lead singer/keyboard player Freddie Mercury. The band also featured Brian May (guitar), Roger Taylor (drums), and John Deacon (bass) - all virtuosos on their respective instruments. Queen is known as one of the most commercially successful bands of all time who also pushed artistic boundaries, a unique and enviable combination in the music industry. Following several chart topping albums, Queen began work in 1975 on what would be their pièce de résistance, A Night At The Opera. The album brought together all of the band’s interests and influences and incorporated a wide range of musical styles, from hard rock to theatrical ballads. The album’s centerpiece was the audacious and operatic “Bohemian Rhapsody”, one of Rock’s most celebrated masterpieces and Queen’s first Number One hit. Queen continued their dominance of the airwaves in the '80s with The Game, which produced the chart-topping songs “Another One Bites the Dust” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. Despite Mercury’s untimely death in 1991, Queen remains one of Rock’s most influential and enduring acts. Queen is a fantastic show for all students and will provide endless educational opportunities and steep challenges for every experience level.
